Backup

You insure your house and your car, but what about your business data? Research indicates that most small business do not plan against data loss. On the whole, disaster recovery strategies are non existent and backup solutions if present are rarely sufficient.

Why is data backup so important?

Take a moment to reflect how much your business data is really worth. What would happen to your business if you lost all of your accounting and payroll records, customer details, product and service information, letters and emails?

Try to evaluate what it would cost to retype all that information, even if all of it was available to recover and re-enter. Would your business survive? Many don't!

Daily backups can be easily done to an external hard disk, however, this would not protect your data from a flood or a fire. Traditionally, businesses overcome this by backing up to tape each night and storing the tapes off-site. This process is laborious as someone needs to be responsible for rotating the tapes and transporting them to another location. In addition, the equipment costs are high, which is why until recently only the large organisations have been able to put in place a real disaster recovery solution.

So what is now available for small business?
